How do Codex banked resets work, and when do they expire?
Open the usage page in settings, select the line that shows an available reset, and confirm: the 5-hour limit and the weekly limit refresh together. /usage in the CLI works too. A banked reset usually expires 30 days after it is granted; go by the expiration shown in your account, because an expired one is not reissued. Send a message right after using it: the next weekly reset is 7 days from that message.
Codex
Select the available reset on the usage page and confirm. The 5-hour and weekly limits refresh together. Most expire after 30 days and are not reissued.
A banked reset is granted to your account during an OpenAI promotion and stays there until you decide to use it. One use refreshes the 5-hour limit and the weekly limit together, and it moves your weekly reset time: 7 days from the first message you send afterwards, so send one right away. It restores your allowance only. It does not raise your plan limits, and it is not paid usage. The sections below cover what people ask most.
What the official docs say
Using a full banked reset refreshes your 5-hour and weekly Codex usage windows and changes your weekly reset date. Check Settings → Usage for your updated reset time. The reset is consumed only when it successfully refreshes at least one eligible usage window. If there is nothing to reset, it remains available.Eligibility, affected usage limits, delivery timing, and expiration vary by offer, plan, workspace, and region. Future resets are not guaranteed.A reset restores your allowance. It does not permanently increase your plan's limits or change how much allowance a task uses.Claude
Claude has no banked resets. An announced reset applies directly: nothing to click, nothing to save.
Anthropic announces a reset and clears usage for all subscribers directly; your weekly reset time does not move. When you run out, Anthropic lists three ways forward: wait for the reset, upgrade your plan, or buy usage credits. Claude Code has no /limit-reset command either.
What the official docs say
Today we are resetting usage limits for all subscribers. If you hit your usage limit, you'll need to wait for it to reset, upgrade your plan, or purchase usage credits. How many you have
Read the number on the usage page, which says something like 1 reset available. You can hold on to them and have more than one at a time. OpenAI has not published a maximum.
Do they expire?
Yes. The period depends on the promotion and is usually 30 days after the reset is granted; go by the expiration shown in your account. Once expired, a reset cannot be restored or reissued, and support will not replace it. The expiration details appear before you confirm.
What the official docs say
Check the expiration shown in your account or offer. Once an unused reset expires, it cannot be restored or reissued.Banked rate-limit resets are usable for 30 days after they're granted.Where to find them
The desktop app, the web and the CLI all lead to the same place: Settings → Usage (on the web, chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage). In the CLI, type /usage and choose to use a reset from the menu. A newly granted reset can take a short time to show up on the usage page.
What the official docs say
Open settings → usage on the desktop app, CLI, or on web. Select the usage summary showing an available reset, such as "1 reset available" or "Full reset." Review the expiration details, then confirm that you want to use it.Type /usage to open the usage menu. Choose whether to show token activity or redeem an available earned reset. How you get one
There are two sources: an official announcement (the Codex entries on whenreset with the type banked reset) and rewards from the referral promotion. You cannot buy one. If you want to pay for more usage, what you buy is something else: credits. OpenAI does not guarantee future grants.
How your weekly reset time changes
It moves. Your new weekly reset time is 7 days after the first message you send once the reset is used, the same rule as after a reset for everyone. If there is nothing to refresh at that moment, confirming does not use up the reset.
A banked reset disappeared
Check in this order. Has it expired? Are you signed in to a different account or workspace? Has the usage page not refreshed yet? Were you eligible for that promotion in the first place? If none of these explains it, contact OpenAI support. Support will not reissue a reset, but it can check whether one was granted by mistake or did not apply.
What the official docs say
Support does not provide manual or courtesy resets.Common misconceptions
- A banked reset can be saved for as long as you like
It cannot; it expires. The period depends on the promotion and is usually 30 days after the reset is granted; go by the expiration shown in your account. An expired reset cannot be restored, and neither OpenAI nor support reissues it.
- If a banked reset is gone, support can give it back
No. OpenAI states that support does not provide manual or courtesy resets. Expired, overlooked or not eligible: none of these is replaced. What support can do is check whether a reset was granted by mistake, or was used and did not apply.
- Using a banked reset leaves the weekly reset time alone
It moves it. The new weekly reset time is 7 days after the first message you send once the reset is used, so send one right away. What stays fixed is the weekly reset time on Claude after a reset for everyone, which has nothing to do with banked resets.
In practice
- Send a message right after using it. The new weekly reset time is 7 days from that message; send it a day late and the reset comes a day late.
- Use it when both the 5-hour limit and the weekly limit are nearly spent, so one reset refreshes both. If you have only hit the 5-hour limit, that resets by itself in a few hours and is not worth a banked reset.
- The day you receive one, open the usage page, read the expiration and put it in your calendar. An expired reset is not reissued.
- Do not use it when your scheduled weekly reset is a day or two away. The allowance is about to come back anyway, so the reset is wasted.
- In the Codex log on whenreset, entries with the type banked reset are the ones OpenAI granted. Check whether you received each of them.
