How is the weekly limit counted?

Claude's weekly limit resets at a fixed time each week assigned to your account. Codex's weekly period runs 7 days from your first request after a reset; where a normal period starts is not documented.

The wiki is available in English and Simplified Chinese. Showing English.

Codex

A 7-day period. After any reset it starts with your first request and runs 7 days from there.

OpenAI documents the weekly period precisely only for the reset case: after a banked, automatic or purchased reset, the new period starts with your first request in Work or Codex, and the next automatic reset is 7 days after that request, not 7 days after payment. Where the period starts on a normal subscription is not documented; Settings → Usage shows the date. Cloud and local usage share the same weekly allowance.

What the official docs say

The weekly limit controls how much included work you can use over the weekly usage period.

Your new weekly usage period starts with your first request in Work or Codex after the reset is applied, regardless of whether you have any remaining usage. Your next automatic weekly reset is scheduled 7 days after that first request.
OpenAI Help Center · Paid weekly Work and Codex rate limit resets
The next automatic weekly reset is 7 days after that first request, not necessarily 7 days after payment.

Local messages and cloud chats share your plan's usage allowance. Weekly limits may also apply.

Claude

Resets at a fixed weekly time assigned to your account, independent of when you start using it.

You receive the full allowance each cycle; the day and time do not move with your usage or your billing date. The weekly limit covers all models. On top of it, some plans meter Opus (and Sonnet) separately, and Fable models can take up to half of the weekly limit. Settings › Usage and /usage show the next reset.

What the official docs say

Weekly limits reset at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account. Your reset day and time stay the same regardless of when you start using Claude or when your subscription begins, and you receive your full weekly allowance each cycle. You can see your next reset time in Settings > Usage.
Claude Help Center · What is the Pro plan?
The session and weekly limits are shared across all models, so switching models doesn't restore access. The Opus and Sonnet limits each apply only to requests to that model family, so switching to a model outside the family with /model keeps you working.
Claude Code docs · Error reference
You can use up to 50% of your weekly usage limits on Fable models at no extra cost. They draw from your plan's regular weekly usage limits and use them faster than other Claude models.

In practice

  • Claude: a weekly reset can be days away; the session limit resets long before it.
  • Codex: redeeming a reset card moves your weekly date. See "Does the countdown change after I use a reset card?".
